At Gems Café & Bistro, we believe that every dish tells a story — and some of our favorite stories begin right here in Alberta, on the farms that supply our kitchen. One of those stories belongs to Sunnie Valley Farms, a certified organic, family‑owned farm whose Berkshire pork has become a cornerstone of several of our signature platters.
A Mission Rooted in Stewardship
Sunnie Valley Farms’ philosophy is simple yet profound: good farming starts with good stewardship, and good stewardship starts with good soil practices. Everything they produce begins with the health of the land, and their commitment to the Canadian Organic Regime ensures that both their farm and animals are cared for with the utmost respect. This dedication results in products they are proud to share — and that we are proud to serve.
Generations of Passion
The Sheehan family’s farming roots run deep. Terry and Roseanna Sheehan, along with their four children, carry forward a legacy that began in 1962 when Terry’s grandfather, Cleatus, homesteaded in the Peace River country. Certified organic since 1997, Sunnie Valley Farms has grown into a model of sustainable agriculture. Terry’s parents, Leo and Sophie, returned to farming after years in the city, purchasing the land that remains the heart of the family’s operation today.
Why It Matters to Us
When we serve Sunnie Valley Berkshire pork at Gems Café & Bistro, we’re not just offering a cut of meat — we’re sharing the Sheehan family’s story of resilience, stewardship, and passion. Their values align with our own: respect for the land, care for the animals, and a belief that food should connect people to place.
We’re honored to feature Sunnie Valley Farms on our menu and to celebrate the farmers whose dedication makes every bite more meaningful. Next time you enjoy one of our sharing platters, know that you’re tasting the result of generations of care, rooted in Alberta soil.
